Between February 1st and May 15th 2007, 10 Caribbean nations will join together in an unprecedented effort to simplify travel restrictions. Inspired by the hosting of the Cricket World Cup – the third largest sporting event in the world – these Caribbean nations will allow visitors to travel between the islands without the hassle of international customs or visas. Furthermore, all 10 nations participating in the Cricket World Cup are located relatively close together, allowing travelers to easily visit several unique destinations in one vacation. Though the Cricket World Cup is scheduled to run from March 5 to April 28, the additional six weeks of hassle-free travel have been allotted to lure additional tourists to the Caribbean. Therefore, you could even take advantage of this travel agreement in early May – after the Cricket World Cup is completed – and hop between islands for a two-week vacation.

Here is a list of the Caribbean nations you will be able to visit without the normal hassles of international travel:

Antigua and Barbuda

Barbados

Dominica

Grenada

Guyana

Jamaica

St. Kitts and Nevis

St. Lucia

St. Vincent and The Grenadines

Trinidad and Tobago

Once you arrive at one of the island nations listed above and clear customs, you will then be able to travel to the other nations without any immigration procedures. For those accustomed to traveling between states in the U.S., this may not seem significant. However, considering the stringent travel guidelines put in place at the beginning of year, this agreement is truly a unique opportunity. Another great aspect of this agreement is that most visitors won’t need to acquire visas for their travel. Residents of the following nations will be allowed to visit any of the 10 countries involved in the Cricket World Cup agreement without a visa:

United States and Dependent Territories

United Kingdom and Dependent Territories

Canada

France and Dependant Territories

The Netherlands and Dependant Territories

Germany

Spain

Japan

Italy

Ireland

South Africa

CARICOM Member Nations (except Haiti)

It is estimated that nearly 95% of the current visitors to these Caribbean nations will be able to travel without visas during this travel window. Even the nations that require a visa for travel will find the process greatly simplified. Prior to the announcement of this travel assistance program, Caribbean nations banded together for several political and economic reasons. CARICOM, short for “Caribbean Community,” is composed of 15 Caribbean nations devoted to increasing tourism opportunities and activities. Beyond the development of long-term tourism assistance programs, CARICOM will also streamline the visa process during the Cricket World Cup for all visitors from nations not listed above. The visa program will include a special website for applications, a 24-hour hotline for visa assistance, three-day turnarounds for visa requests, waiving of visa fees for children 12 and under and additional preparation for visitor emergencies. As helpful as the CARICOM programs are today for travelers looking to secure a visa, this group of Caribbean nations will only make life easier for all tourists in the years to come.

Most importantly, you don’t need to visit or participate in the Cricket World Cup to take advantage of this travel opportunity. Besides the high-profile cricket matches, the Cricket World Cup will also bring plenty of events to the islands. Though these Caribbean islands are always centers of activity, the Cricket World Cup is certain to draw even more festivals, live music and fine art events.

Whether you are a cricket fan or not, there has never been a better time to visit the Caribbean. Book a flight and get ready to experience these unique and exotic islands for yourself.

Las Vegas might be known worldwide as a gambling and entertainment city but there is definitely more you can do there. The city is full of attractions that you might need a whole week to explore it.

For hobby photographers, this article will guide you what to look and capture in the city of sins.

The City’s Panorama
There is one place perfect to get a good overview of the city and that is the Stratosphere Tower. You will have to pay to get to the top but it’s definitely worth it. The sweeping view of the city from the top is overwhelming, and getting even more impressive during the night. You’ll have a great photo opportunity too of the famous Las Vegas Strip, having a bird’s eye view of the strip hotels. Alternatively, you can climb up the Eiffel Tower at Paris Hotel for a great panorama too.

The Hotels
Hotels in Las Vegas are known for their size, extravagant style and luxurious interiors. It is a great idea to take some shots of these hotels from Wynn, The Venetian, Caesar’s Palace, Paris Hotel to the Bellagio. If you’re impressed with the exterior then hold your breath for the inside.

GARDENS OF VEGAS

Roman Garden - This beautiful roman-themed garden in front of the Caesar’s Palace is a great subject for photography. With its statues and magnificent fountains, the place is worth capturing.

Botanical Garden - Looking for exotic flowers and plants in Las Vegas? Bellagio Hotel has a conservatory and botanical gardens which display an array of plants and flowers that highlight every season.

Secret Garden - Siegfried and Roy’s secret garden at the Mirage is a home to some rare animals like the white tigers and lions.

THE ATTRACTIONS
Make your cameras ready for these following attractions…

The Venetian Grand Canal - At the hotel’s front yard is a copy of the original Grand Canal of Venice where interested visitors can ride a gondola.

The Forum Shops - The building’s entrance is inspired by the ancient gates of the Roman Forum. As you turn right from the entrance, you’ll find a copy of the Trevi Fountain. The interior is gorgeous too, it has a fountain just as you enter inside and a beautiful painted ceiling with ornate pillars everywhere.

The Bellagio Fountains - Probably the most famous attraction in Las vegas. These giant fountains dance choreographically with the music being played.

The Eifel Tower - Just like in Paris, the tower attracts a lot of visitors. It has a restaurant on top and offers a great view of the city. If planning to get a good shot of the Bellagio fountains, the tower is one good place.

Treasure Island - An exotic island is being integrated in the hotel’s facade with palms, cabanas, sailing ship, ship wreck and a seaport all in one place.

Mandalay Bay’s Artificial Beach - Yes they have a beach and what is most interesting about it is that it can simulate waves up to 6 feet high. You can even go surfing here.

New York New York’s Facade - It is where you can see all of New York’s attractions in one place. You’ve got the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Manhattan’s skyscrapers.

The Fremont Street Experience - This is a light and sound show at the famous Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas.

Downtown Las Vegas - You might be enjoying yourself already with the so many attractions on the strip but visiting the original would complete your visit.

These all in all could make a great Las Vegas photo collection. Enjoy yourself!

More and more expatriates are attracted to Bulgaria each year.

These expatriates are drawn by the climate, the safe sandy beaches, the incredibly low cost of living and low prices generally, the historical heritage that Bulgaria offers and the welcome they get from the friendly Bulgarians.

While Bulgaria does not yet have the same destination appeal of Spain or Portugal say, all that is about to change as Bulgaria gets closer to entry into the EU in 2007.

Those choosing a new life in Bulgaria now are getting in ahead of the pack as this country is about to become very fashionable.

If you are thinking that Bulgaria might be the place for you what can you expect from life in Bulgaria? And which areas are attracting the main influx of expatriates?

The biggest growth rates in terms of expat population increase are expected in the more desirable areas in and around the major resort centres of Varna and Burgas. With further population development expected in other selected ‘premium quality’ locations on the Black Sea coast.

British expats already living in Bulgaria are attracted to the fact that you are far less likely to become a victim of crime in Bulgaria than on any UK street nowadays. Street crime in Bulgaria is rare, and general crimes against ‘the person’ are statistically lower compared to western European countries.

On the whole Bulgaria is a peaceful, law abiding and trouble free country and Bulgarians are friendly, warm and welcoming people.

Expatriates attracted to Bulgaria are rewarded with great beaches a sunny climate and attractions as diverse as wine tasting, aqua parks, ancient monuments, nature parks, music and flower festivals.

And the cost of living is incredibly low.

The economic forecast for Bulgaria.

Since 1989 Bulgaria has been going through a successful transformation from a state controlled economy to an open market economy - so successful has the transformation proved to be that Bulgaria has been invited to join the European Union with membership time-tabled for 2007.

In general financial analysts agree that Bulgaria is currently undervalued, and therefore base costs are lower than the market realisation set against forecasts of growth and increased investment flows.

In terms of what this means to those living in Bulgaria - the costs of living are exceptional low. But this is not going to last forever.

Bulgaria is currently benefiting from the European Union’s heavy investment into the country. Millions of Euro dollars being spent on upgrading the country’s roads and airports and schemes such as the “Beautiful Bulgaria Project” are being set up to refurbish the historical and architectural gems of Bulgaria.

All this work is meant to encourage new private investment to help bring Bulgaria more in line with its European neighbours in time for the 2007 EU entry.

This means that Bulgaria is increasing as a tourist and expat destination of choice year on year and those living in Bulgaria will only benefit as the country moves strongly towards EU entry.

Condo hotels, also known as condotels, are a relatively new concept in vacation home ownership. They allow individuals to own condos in luxury hotels and have access to all the amenities of that hotel. When not using their condo unit themselves, owners have the option of placing it in the hotel’s rental program and receiving a percentage of the revenue it generates.

Because the condo hotel concept is so new, it’s often confused with timeshares, a popular vacation home option that has been around since the 1970s. In reality, condo hotels have many qualities that set them apart from timeshares and make them appealing to a unique segment of the second home market. Here’s a comparison between these two types of real estate investment.

FLEXIBILITY IN USE

Timeshares - When you purchase a timeshare, you choose not only a set location but also a specific week or two that you will use your vacation home every year.

Condo Hotels - With a condo hotel, you have flexibility to use your unit whenever you want. Keep in mind, however, that some condo hotels do have living restrictions that prevent you from making your condo a permanent residence.

AMENITIES

Timeshares - The average timeshare has a community pool and some common areas.

Condo Hotels - Condo hotels have many of the amenities you would find at luxury hotels. In addition to a pool (or pools), there is probably an on-site restaurant (possibly several), a lounge, a full-service spa, a state-of-the-art exercise facility, a poolside bar, etc.

FURNISHINGS

Timeshares – Timeshares are sold fully furnished. The quality of furnishings depends on the individual development. The cost for the furnishings is built into the price.

Condo Hotels - Condo hotel units are sold fully furnished typically with high-end furniture, appliances and fixtures selected by a professional interior designer. The cost for furnishings is included in the price of the condo hotel unit.

SERVICES

Timeshares - In a timeshare, you are responsible for your own housekeeping and unit upkeep during your stay.

Condo Hotels - You get daily housekeeping as you would in a luxury hotel. You have access to room service, concierge services, maintenance services and check-in services. The vast majority of condo hotels are operated by big-name hoteliers like Ritz Carlton and Hilton, the consummate professionals when it comes to customer service. Most of the same services available at their high-end hotels are offered at their condo hotels.

LOCATION

Timeshares - Timeshares are located in highly-desirable resort areas.

Condo Hotels - Condo hotels are also located in highly-desirable resort areas.

PRICE

Timeshares - Prices for timeshares vary greatly but are typically lower than condo hotel prices because you are only purchasing one or two weeks of usage. In addition, you do not receive any of the revenue generated during the 50+ weeks that your timeshare unit is used by others.

With timeshares, as much as 40%-50% of the price goes to sales commissions. Why are the sales commissions so high? The developer must maintain a large sales force in order to make approximately 50 sales for every unit (one for every week of the year).

Condo Hotels - You receive deeded ownership to the property. Although more expensive, condo hotels tend to give you more for your money than timeshares. More of your dollar goes into “bricks and mortar” high-quality finishes not sales commissions.

In addition, when not using your condo hotel unit, you can place it in the management’s rental program and receive a percentage of the revenue it generates, helping to offset your maintenance costs and debt service.

RENTAL INCOME POTENTIAL

Timeshares - You have the option of renting out your timeshare to someone of your own choosing or placing it in a rental program if you decide not to use it during your allotted week. If you participate in the rental program, you will split the revenue generated with the property’s management company. Remember, you are only renting out the one or two weeks per year that you own.

Condo Hotels - Like a timeshare, you have the option of finding your own renters or placing your condo hotel unit into the rental program. You may participate in the rental program and receive a portion of the revenue it generates any time that you are not occupying your unit, whether it be for one night or 365 per year.

POTENTIAL APPRECIATION

Timeshares - Historically, timeshares depreciate in value from the time they are purchased. Values have been poor because of the large number of resales on the market and a continuous stream of new developments competing with them.

The secondary market for reselling timeshares has never taken off. The fact is, most people who buy a timeshare will have it for life, whether they want to or not.

Condo Hotels - Because condo hotels are a relatively new type of property investment, they are limited to just a handful of locales across the country. The supply is small and demand is currently high and growing, all of which contribute rapid and significant appreciation. Another factor to keep in mind when reselling a condo hotel unit is that you’re selling not only the actual unit but also the luxury lifestyle that comes with an amenity-filled, high-service property.

Many condo hotels are sold out in pre-construction. Often the developers, sensing the high demand, will themselves raise prices many times before all units are gone.

For example, The Mutiny condo hotel located in Coconut Grove, Florida was the first condo hotel to be built in South Florida. From the time the developer began accepting deposits until it sold out in pre-construction, there were nine price increases. People who bought early did exceptionally well.

When I was 48 I decided to fulfill a lifelong dream and take an Outward Bound course. I was moving from New Jersey to Colorado and wanted to make sure I’d learn the basics of backpacking in the wilderness. I signed up for a three week basic mountaineering course given during the summer, attended mostly by 18 year old kids. My camping experience had been very limited; a few excursions through the Pine Barrens and an occasional overnight camping trip. I didn’t know about equipment, how to pack, light a stove, or take a hike.

Outward Bound was pretty much a disaster for me. Although I’m extremely fit and could keep up with the pace of those decades younger, I frankly didn’t enjoy their company. We never learned much about map reading, compass skills, or safe cooking. Information was casually imparted and the whole concept seemed more like the Army than a learning experience. We got up every morning 6:00 a.m., packed impossibly heavy backpacks (mine weighed 55 pounds, while my total body weight is 112) and we just humped and humped. The terrain was steep and difficult and there was very little guidance about how to endure what appeared to me to be endless misery.

A week after the end of the Outward Bound experience I took another hiking trip with the Sierra Club into the Snowmass Wilderness of Colorado. To my delight, my pack weighed only 40 pounds, which seemed like featherweight compared to my previous experience. The folks ranged in age from 20-50 and were very affable. We learned from each other. In the hours we spent together hiking through the woods, valleys, and mountains I learned this: every one had come to backpacking through a pure love of the wilderness, and had learned what works and what doesn’t through a series of learning disasters.

If you’ve spent one cold night in the wilderness you’ll quickly learn the importance of staying warm and dry. Exactly how one does that is more than a series of trials and errors. There truly are several basic backpacking rules that can make the difference between a wonderful wilderness experience and pure, unadulterated suffering. Further, there is much to be learned about safety, food handling, and water purification. Clothing needs to be specific to the environment and hiking poles are invaluable.

After my summer of wandering around Colorado I came to rest at KB Mountain Adventures on Bear Basin Ranch in Westcliffe, Colorado. My partner and I run various outdoor adventure programs – all women weeks, Father-Son Cowboy Camp, Mountain Sports Weeks, Photography Workshops and a host of customized fun adventure programs involving rock climbing, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, and mountain hiking. A few months ago Bob and I were trekking back from one of our many two day forays into the beautiful Sangre de Cristo Mountains. As always, I had picked up a few more tips on how to stay happy, well fed, and safe in the wilderness. Bob is a mountaineer of 30 years with four expeditions to Mt. Everest under his belt. There’s not much he doesn’t know and there’s not many mistakes he hasn’t made.

I’ll never forget this October morning, because the beauty of the mountains was stunning. White-golden aspen were everywhere, and the creeks flowed generously as we walked out. As usual in Colorado, the weather changed in a heartbeat and it started to snow. We were prepared with the right clothes and attitudes, and enjoyed every minute of it. At some point in the journey we decided that we would put together a Backpacking Basics course, to teach people from scratch about how to camp well. I’m happy to say the course is up and running and we hope to be among the first outfitters in the country to focus on the adult population. It’s never too late to learn to take a hike, and our goal is to reach out to folks who have been hiking informally or who haven’t even set foot in the woods.

The best thing about the Outward Bound experience is that I know I’ll never do it again. Sometimes, out of the ashes of something difficult there is born a good idea, and we like to think that Backpacking Basics is just that – a good solid idea, long overdue. Come out to Bear Basin and be taught the basics in an instruction-rich, non-threatening environment. This country is just too beautiful to miss, and sometimes the only way to see things is on foot.

Executive coaching and business coaching evolved from the corporate education and training world. The fee structure for coaching also has roots within this same world.

The traditional fee methodology for education and training is to determine a price per participant. This pricing model includes material, hours and any additional out of pocket expenses such as travel and lodging. For many coaches, this model is still being used and fails to address 2 critical issues:

Value

Return on investment

According to Webster, value means “to be worth.” How much are you worth from a fee perspective? A recent survey issued by Sherpa Coaching suggested that coaches with 5 years of experience or more earn $300 per hour. However, a colleague of mine saw his value or worth through a different filter which increased his hourly rate to around $800 an hour.

Return on investment (ROI) can be constructed using a variety of formulas. For me, the simplest way to achieve ROI is to project the desired results in dollars, subtract the coaching fees and then divide the remainder by the fees. For example, if the desired results are a $48,000 increase in revenue and the coaching fee is $8,000, then balance of $40,000, if achieved, is a 5 to 1 return on investment.

When business coaches or executives coaches think in a per participant pricing mentality because of past conditioning, then they have decreased both their own value and motivation to secure a positive return on investment. And with a 40% growth rate within an annual $1 billion industry, maybe it is time to rethink your fees to truly become one of 10 coaches who earn more than $100,000 annually.

Set in Austria, the Sound of Music is an epic film spurring dreams of a heavenly land in every child that sees the movie. In truth, they should have filmed the movie in Halstatt, Austria.

Halstatt

I had been in Salzburg for four days and was growing restless. The city was an eyeful with beautiful garden areas, architecture and plenty of sites to see. At the end of the day though, it was still a city. And an expensive city at that!

Flipping through my guidebook, a local I had made friends with suggested I take a day trip to the little town of Halstatt. As I looked under “H” in the index, he told me I wouldn’t find it in the book and I should just trust him. Off to the train station we went.

Sitting on the train, I soon met a fellow traveler heading to Halstatt. We chatted as the train puttered up into some of the most impressive mountains I’d ever seen. Soon we were running between the face of a mountain and a deep blue lake. The train stopped and he indicated this was our stop. There was a small shack, but no other buildings much less a small town. I began to suspect my buddy in Salzburg had pulled on over on me.

Out of nowhere, a small ferry pulled up to our shack. On we hopped and off we went across the lake. As we closed in on the far shore, a small town began to take shape. Swiss chalets, swans, cobble stone streets, outdoor cafes and…no cars. None.

Halstatt turned out to run about a mile along the shore of the lake. It was like something out of heaven. It is amazing how quiet things are when there are no cars, mopeds, trucks and other vehicles. Frankly, it was surreal.

I rented a room in a chalet directly on the shore of the lake. My window looked out over the lake. As the evening wound down, it was hard to imagine a more peaceful place in the world. The morning was more amazing.

Halstatt is located at a very high point in the Alps, which had a surprising effect. Lying in bed, I stared out my window into what looked like a television set gone bad. It was totally grey. Walking to the window, I was stunned to realize we were so high the clouds had settled roughly 20 feet above the lake. Words fail me, but it was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen. There was total silence, a slowly swirling cloud cover being reflected by the lake and swans floating around. Truly a site to behold.

Halstatt is a difficult one-day excursion from Salzburg? The difficulty lies in leaving. I stayed for a week!

The weather in the Dominican Republic remains tropical year-round with the temperatures averaging around 25°C (77°F). The summer and winter seasons differ by only a slight variation in temperature. Visitors coming to the Dominican Republic, practically any time of the year can expect to be treated with extended periods of blue sunny skies — ideal weather for getting a nice tan.

The best time to visit Punta Cana is during the “cool” season from November to April. During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm with relatively low levels of humidity and low precipitation. Temperatures along the coast are constant around 29°C (84°F) during the day and drop to a comfortable 20°C (68°F) at night.

The “hot” season runs roughly from May to October when the average temperature rises to 31°C (87°F) during the daytime and drops to about 22°C (72°F) at night. But with the high humidity levels during this season, the temperature feels much hotter. Rains do bring some respite from the heat during May through August, but usually this turns out to be no more than a 30-minute tropical shower. It is advised that travelers pack light and include a lot of cool and light fitting cotton clothing.

Despite such minimal difference between the temperatures in summer and winter, the climate tends to vary a lot from year to year due to the influence of the weather phenomena known as “El Niño” and “La Niña” among others. The greatest threat to the Dominican Republic comes from hurricanes. The Caribbean hurricane season lasts from June 1 to November 30. August and September are the more hurricane-prone months. The major resorts have become adept at getting back on their feet quickly after a hurricane.

As in most tropical areas, in Punta Cana too the menace of mosquitoes looms large. The mosquitoes usually appear after dusk but they are seasonal and more noticeable in the rainy season. Visitors are advised to wear long, comfortable cotton pants after dusk and use insect repellent sprays before venturing outside.

The consequences of tourism are economic, social, cultural and environmental. In the case of each they bring positive and negative effects. The costs and benefits vary between MEDC and LEDC.

In the LEDC Bali tourism has had a positive effect on the economy where many new jobs have been created especially in hotels, travel agencies and the craft and entertainment. However this has caused the problem of the low level jobs being given to the locals whilst whites fill the managerial posts. Much of the money from tourism is being spent on schools, cultural, improvements, temple maintenance etc. Though, increasingly much of the money is being spent on imported goods, which don’t benefit the islands economy. Nonetheless ecotourism brought many problems. The main problems included the damage to Hol Chan Marine Reserve coral, decline in conch and lobster-being over fished to meet expanded tourist market. Furthermore the government stripped part of Caye Caulker Caye to make a landing strip, destroying nesting sites and threatening the local water supply. Hence it would seem here that tourism is creating more problems than benefits.

If we look at the MEDC Spain and the Costas tourism has been very economically successful. 10% GNP is generated by tourism and in Majorcan 60% GNP (85% if you include construction). Again tourism has brought problems economically. It did lead to a measure of prosperity to the coast but only in unskilled occupations. It also drained labor from the interior with abandonment of Land. The economic benefits of tourism have not spread inland. Moreover there has been an over-concentration of tourism on the Costa del Sol East and West Malaga: this has led to over development of the coast and abandonment of traditional fishing activities. Thus, Spanish tourism has brought adverse environmental problems and very little benefits for the country. The multi storey buildings along sea fronts have blocked the light and sea views from buildings further inland. There is too little investment in infrastructure, water supply, sewage treatment: traffic bottlenecks.

Furthermore about 53% of the species of mammal found in Spain are classified as under threat. The Costa Donana, Spain’s premier national park and one of Europe’s most important wildlife sanctuaries is in danger of drying up because water is being extracted first for irrigation and now for tourist developments. Tourism also leads to beach and ocean pollution, the Mediterranean Sea is known as the largest sewer in the world. Increasingly it has been dumping ground for untreated sewage, industrial and chemical waste, pesticides, fertilizers and oils. The government has tried to solve these problems by introducing strategies. The Balearic government has announced a budget of 65 million to improve public and tourist amenities such as waste disposal, street lighting, road, beach and park maintenance. It has also introduced more strict controls to improve the quality of the environment i.e. cleaner beaches and to reduce sea pollution.

Furthermore in 1976, the Barcelona Convention was signed by 18 countries which border the Mediterranean. They agreed to control the release of industrial waste and other steps were taken including the setting up of 83 marine laboratories to monitor pollution.

Consequently it would seem tourism has brought benefits in the fact that environmental legislations have been tightened up and the value of the coast is beginning to be maintained and retained in order for it to survive.
